Campfire Song

I went to Monday School with Ian, who was two years my senior, and met him when I was in the eighth grade and we were both in Sandra West's guitar class. When Mrs West asked if any of us would like to play a song we had learned, I immediately volunteered but then got nervous. Ian was there, with a sweet smile just like the one in the picture. "It's all right, don't be nervous," he told me, pulling up a stool and encouraging me t get in front of the class. "I'll play with you, would you like that?" I nodded, encouraged by his kindness.. "I know, let's do 'Campfire Song'," he sugested, and before I knew it, we were both singing, "C-A-M-P-F-I-R-E S-O-N-G song.." (a Spongebob song). "Remember, just enjoy playing and don't think about the people," he told me, then, laughing with a mischievous smile on his face, "but if you must... then picture them all in their Spongebob underwear." I stared laughing and as we sang we couldn't get out all the words because we were both laughing. We got the class to sing along and laugh, too! Since that time I was never nervous to play and sing in front of people again, because of sweet, funny Ian.

A couple years later I was playing guitar on a bench and Ian asked me to play him one of my songs. When I tried to think of which one to play, he said "Play your favorite." So I played him "Fireflies", a song I wrote. He seemed really touched by it, and liked one part so much he asked me to play it again! Even though he was a better guitarist and wrote so many beautiful songs himself. Ian was the only person outside of my family who asked me to play one of my songs. He was brilliant, funny, wonderful, and for those who know him, it's impossible not to love him. I miss you, Ian.
