Obituary for Esme Yeo Lipscomb (Stares)

Esme Yeo Lipscomb (Stares)
Memorial services marking the passing of 97 year old Esme Yeo Stares Lipscomb will be held on Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Gallagher Funeral Home, Ball, Louisiana, under the direction of Gallagher Funeral Home and Crematory of Ball, Louisiana. Visitation will be observed from 2:00 p.m. until time of service.

Esme was born in Carmarthen, South Wales, Great Britain on April 20, 1919. She was raised in Swansea where she was part of the community choir. Her plans to immigrate to Australia were cut short by World War II. She enlisted in the Royal Air Force as a WAF switchboard operator near Bletchley, where she met her future husband, William Martin Lipscomb, a US Army enlisted man working on moving troop trains around the country. They were married in Swansea and she immigrated to Alexandria, Louisiana after the war. She became a naturalized US citizen.

She was a hard working out-spoken woman who took to heart the British sayings, “Keep a stiff upper lip” and “Keep Calm and Carry On”. She was a skilled seamstress making bridal gowns and pageant dresses for locals in her younger years. She made custom drapery, slip covers and pillows for some of the best known decorators in town. She could make a knitting needle fly. She took up quilting and was a member of Patience Quilters Guild for many years. She was a life-long vegetable and flower gardener. She was a fantastic cook, carrying on British traditions adapting to the local favorites and trying everything in her new country. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Pineville, Louisiana, since her arrival in town where she worked in the baby nursery for years. She faithfully attended and enjoyed the senior lunch gatherings on Wednesdays at Pineville Church of God for many years.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, William Martin Lipscomb.

She is survived by her son, Thomas Martin Lipscomb and wife Kitty Allen Lipscomb of Pineville; daughters, Patricia “Tish” Lipscomb Daigre Crawford of Pineville, and Susan Lipscomb McConnell and husband David Wayne McConnell of Pineville; grandchildren, Tracy Daigre Sasser, Dylan McConnell, Travis Nasello and Troy Nasello; two great grandchildren, Zachary Emile Sasser and Chloe Nichole Perego-McConnell.
