Homegoing services for Mattie Lou Chandler will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 17, 2015 at the Gallagher Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Chris Black officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Ball, LA. under the direction of Gallagher Funeral Home of Ball, La.
Mrs. Chandler, 86, entered eternal rest at her home surrounded by her family on the morning of March 14, 2015. She was born September 8, 1928 to James Monroe and Georgia Stevens Snodgrass in Omaha, Texas.
Mrs. Chandler is preceded in death by her late husbands, Johnny Lawrence Roberts, Neal R. Chandler, and very dear friend, Herbert F. Thompson. One brother, Coye Snodgrass and his wife Velma Heard Snodgrass. Two step sons, Neely (Bubby) Roberts and Donald Wayne Roberts.
She is survived by her sons, Steve Roberts Sr. (wife Frances) of New Orleans, LA and Mark A. Chandler of Pineville, LA. Grandchildren: Steve Roberts, Jr (wife Randi) of Pineville, La, Matthew Roberts (wife Jade) of Pineville, LA, Jason R. Husser of Husser, La, and Jardin L. Husser of Offutt AFB, Nebraska. Also, four great grandchildren, Gavin H. Roberts, Emma R. Roberts, Bryce D. Roberts and Jack S. Roberts all of Pineville. A niece, Barbara Snodgrass Carver and husband J.L. Carver of Longview, Texas. Her nephews Michael Snodgrass (wife Jesse) of Fort Worth, TX and Leland Snodgrass (wife Izzy) of Tyler, TX. Three Step Children, Hazel D. Roberts Lobell of Metairie, LA; Eugene Chandler of Metairie, LA, and Neal Chandler of Ball, LA. and numerous great nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Chandler enjoyed a full, happy life. She worked for CLECO in Montgomery, LA from 1949-1953 and then worked as a Congressional Secretary for her close family friend Louisiana Congressmen, Speedy O. Long in Washington D.C. from 1968-1972. She worked at Saint Francis Cabrini Hospital as a Purchasing Agent from 1965-1968 and Assistant Personnel Director from 1973-1978. She especially enjoyed her time as a receptionist for the Catholic Diocese of Alexandria from 1981-1986. She was a volunteer at Rapides Regional Hospital as an Auxiliary for the Intensive Care Waiting Area 2004-2009. She was proud to be a “Navy Wife” and to be the mother and grandmother of family members serving in the military. Those family members proud to serve are CW2 Neal Chandler (WWII)(US Navy), step-grandson MSgt (Ret) Neal Chandler (USMC), her eldest son LTC (Ret) Steve Roberts Sr. (US Army), MAJ (Ret) Frances Roberts (U S Army), TSgt Steve Roberts, Jr. (USAF), SSgt Matthew Roberts (USAF), SSgt Jardin L. Husser (USAF).
The family wants to thank the caregivers from Rapides Regional, Riverside Health Care, HealthSouth, Stat Home Care, Saint Joseph Hospice Care and great niece Diane Gilley for all their care, support and love for Mrs. Chandler since her illness began in November 2014.
Pallbearers honored to serve will be Jason Husser, Steve Roberts Jr, Matthew Roberts, Ross Snodgrass, Harold Hemphill and Al Bedoya. Honorary Pallbearers are MSgt (Ret) Neal Chandler and SSgt Zach Stanton.
