Obituary for Songia Gail Hickman

We only live for a time, so let us be kind and offer love with forgiveness in the breaths and moments that we’re given. Allow blessings to ever flow forth spurring each other on until we embrace Him, Jesus, who sits upon all beginning and end. For He is the key to life and the foundation upon which to build. And so, in that life, through our flaws, let His light ever shine bright. As the homecoming comes in time, let our dash be meaningful to everyone.

Songia Gail Crooks Hickman was a daughter, a sister, a wife, a mom, an aunt and a grandmother. She was very loving, giving, caring with a joyful and friendly personality. She was a homemaker, a creative, a crafter, a cook and a crocheter. Gail grew up in Deville where she lived most of her life around friends and family. Her favorite color was green. And she loved her flowers.

Gail never met a stranger. She could always make friends with anyone and find ways to relate to them. She made countless crochet baby blankets, afghans or “aff-fa-gans” as she would call them, slippers, scarfs, hot pads and kitchen towels for people she either knew a long time, just met or a friend of someone else.

In the last 15 years of her life Gail showed what it looked like to be a fighter. She endured several different types of cancers. Again, she made all kinds of friends with fellow patients, nurses, doctors and nurse’s aides. She was thankful for their support. Though, it was a for sure battle, yet she kept pushing for as long as she could, enjoying every little moment with her family and her dogs.

Throughout her life, she had many dogs and treated them as part of the family. She’d make sure they’d have a tiny bite no matter what she was eating, even if it was from her favorite restaurant, Popeyes!

Gail came into this life on March 31, 1950. As she let out one last tear, she went home to be with Jesus at 2:25 p.m. on July 2, 2022.

Songia Gail Crooks Hickman was preceded in death by her parents Willie and Jessie Crooks and her husband, Rodney Hickman. She is survived by her two children Kayla DeWilde and Randy Hickman, son-in-law James Jimbo DeWilde and two granddaughters Kasey and Kaydence. And by her brother and family, Shelton “Bubba” and Gayle Crooks, Renee David, Zach Crooks and Nathaniel Crooks, children and grandchildren. She will be missed by many friends and family that either knew her as “sister” or “baby” or “aunt” or “grandma”.

Services will be ministered by Rev. Ronnie Nation and music by Chris Steiner at 3:00 p.m. at Gallagher Funeral Home on Saturday, July 9, 2022, visitation will begin at 1:30. Pallbearers will be Thomas DeWilde, Lloyd Reed, Zach Crooks, Scott Crooks, Adam Harris, and Morey Skluzacek. Honorary pallbearers are Nathaniel Crooks, Kale David, Kaden David, Tristan DeWilde, Tanner DeWilde and Sam West.
