Obituary for Ruby Lee Yeager

Ruby Lee Scarber Yeager, age 96, passed away peacefully at home Thursday, March 9, surrounded by her loving family. Ruby was born in Hutton, Louisiana, to Make and Pearl Scarber on May 18, 1926. She married the love of her life, Lawrence Rollo Yeager, on Christmas Day, December 25, 1946. Together they were blessed with one daughter, Karen Kaye (K.K.).

Ruby was a proud teacher in the Rapides Parish School System for 21 years. She earned her undergraduate degree from Louisiana College and her Master’s Degree in Education from Louisiana State University. She was a loyal Tiger throughout her life and traveled with her husband to Tiger Stadium for football games well into their eighties. She was also an active member of Parkview Baptist Church for over 65 years, serving the Lord faithfully every day of her life. After retirement, Ruby stayed active by volunteering as a Pink Lady at CHRISTUS St. Frances Cabrini Hospital, a member of the ADK teachers’ sorority, and traveling the world with her husband, dearest friends, and beloved sisters. She did not shy away from adventure and always followed her motto of, “Go while you can!”

Her greatest joy in life, though, was her family. Ruby was a devoted “Little Daboo” to her two grandchildren, David and Leigh Anne, and was present at every awards ceremony, soccer game, baseball game, golf tournament, and dance recital throughout their childhoods. Once they graduated and moved away, she loved visiting them in North Carolina, Washington, D.C., and Alabama, and getting to know their new friends and new homes just as she knew all their childhood friends in Alexandria.

Ruby was preceded in death by her parents, Make and Pearl Scarber; her siblings Myrtle Wiggins, Doris Dickerson, Coy Scarber, Louise Clark, and Jerry Scarber; nieces, Patricia Arnett and JoAn Archuleta; and her devoted husband, Lawrence R. Yeager. Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter K.K. White and her husband, Charlie White, of Alexandria; her grandson Dr. David White and his wife, Dr. Gina White, of Huntsville, Alabama; her granddaughter Leigh Anne Lee and her husband, James Lee, of Huntsville, Alabama; and five wonderful great-grandchildren: Nathan White, Emmeline White, Cora White, Winston White, and Genevieve Lee.

Her family would like to thank Jeannie Ashworth, Patty Berry, Brenda Hairford, Lynn Kirkpatrick, Alexis Klein, Jennifer Nugent, Michelle Taylor, and Penny Watson for their love and care of their beloved mother and grandmother. They would also Allison Young and Rhonda Cole of Compassionate Care Hospice for their thoughtful attention and care during her final months. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in memory of Ruby Yeager to Parkview Baptist Church and the Food Bank of Central Louisiana. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Ruby Yeager lived each day to the fullest and never allowed herself to be thought of as elderly, even at the age of 96. Her spunk, loyal friendship, and devotion to her family will be greatly missed.
