Obituary for Joanne Nichols Vernon

If you were a stranger who crossed her path, you know that she was a friend to everyone and her eyes sparkled when she smiled at you. If you were her customer, you know that she had impeccable taste, a great work ethic and a sense of humor that would leave everyone giggling. If you were her friend, you know that she was a great storyteller, loyal, genuine, and always spoke the truth even if you didn’t ask for it. If you were her family, you know that she loved fiercely and required very little to be content.
Joanne Nichols Vernon was born to Hayden Nichols and Annie Lou Watts on November 24, 1938. After the death of her parents, Joanne was raised by her aunt and uncle, Phelda and WC Ward in Monroe. She married her handsome husband, Charles Vernon, in 1961. Charles worked at the Post Office and Joanne worked at Mitzie’s Shoes “for a hundred years, baby.” Together, they raised their four children, Kim, Chuck, Dawn and Drew in Kolin. Later in life, Joanne and Charles built their charming home on Cotile Lake. Joanne loved their house and spent countless hours in her chair, at her table overlooking the lake. Many years after Charles’ death, Joanne found companionship in her lifelong friend, Richard Treadway. She and Richard (mostly) enjoyed many years together.
Joanne had a way of drawing people to her. She never met a stranger and honestly considered everyone a friend. She always had a story to tell, most of which would leave you laughing hysterically and wiping away tears, terribly embarrassed or both. She offered kindness and her opinion to all who came in contact with her. She spoke with a drawl that we will imitate for the rest of our lives and had a zest for life that we can only hope for.
Near the end of her life, she assured her family that she would go to Heaven when she died because she had accepted Jesus into her heart. We find peace in the fact that she is in Heaven and giggle thinking about her at the feet of Jesus.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Hayden and Annie Lou Watts Nichols; her aunt and uncle Phelda and WC Ward, her husband Charles Vernon; and her dear friend Richard Treadway.
Those left to laugh and tell stories about her include her 4 children, Kim Folse (Rocky), Chuck Vernon (Faith), Dawn Mitchell, Drew Vernon, her favorite ex daughter-in-law , Diranda Cloud Vernon; 10 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandson; sister Sandra Wulf (Dan), sister Judy Stovall (Jerry) and that damn dog she inherited late in life, Tulah.
