Obituary for Dr. Joe Bernard Black

Dr. Joe Bernard Black, age 87, entered into eternal rest on Friday, July 16, 2021 at his residence in Pineville. Memorial Services for Dr. Joe Black will be held on Monday, July 19, 2021 at 2:00 PM at First Baptist Church Pineville with Dr. Stewart Holloway officiating. Friends are welcomed to visit from 12:00 PM until the time of service.
Joe was born, November 1, 1933 to Otis Harvey Black and Sarah Elizabeth Kilpatrick Black in Noxapater, Mississippi.
He was a graduate of Noxapater High School and Mississippi College with a B.S. in Zoology, in 1955. Additional study and research at Tulane University, resulted in a Master's (1957) and Ph.D. (1963) degrees, and a lifelong interest in teaching and research.
In 1955 he married the love of his life, Marilyn Elizabeth Fulton Black, a union resulting in a daughter, Ruth Anne Black Rogers (Glen) of Houston, Texas.
Dr. Joe was employed as a teacher by Mississippi College (1962-1964), McNeese State University (1964-1977), and Louisiana College (1957-1960 and 1977-2000). He continued to work as a part time teacher at L.C. until 2013. As part of his duties as Professor and Chairman of Biology at L.C., he was the advisor to Pre-Med, Pre-Dental, Pre-Vet, Med. Tech, and Physical Therapy students. This was a great source of pleasure to him to see his students succeed in their chosen occupations.
Dr. Joe trusted in the Lord Jesus at the age of 11. He and Marilyn were active in churches wherever they went. He was ordained as a Deacon by Trinity Baptist Church in 1966 and also served as Deacon and Sunday School teacher at First Baptist Pineville for over 30 years.
In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his brother Otis "Pat" Black.
He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Marilyn Fulton Black; daughter, Ruth Rogers (Glen); grandson, Daniel Collins; granddaughter, Emily Collins and step-granddaughters, Karis and Genna Rogers.
