Obituary for Colleen Penny (Moore)

Mrs. Alice Colleen Penny, age 93, passed away peacefully at her home in Comfort, Texas on Thursday, August 18, 2022. She will be laid to rest with her husband on Friday, August 26, 2022 at 1:30 PM at the Central Louisiana Veterans Cemetery in Leesville, Louisiana with Reverend John Moore officiating and under the direction of Gallagher Funeral Home in Ball, Louisiana.

Alice Colleen Moore Penny was born April 29, 1929 to Herman Franklin and Sarah Agnes Armstrong Moore in Morrison, Virginia. She was the youngest of eight children.

She met her husband of 69 ½ years, Clifton Barnes Penny Jr. when she was 15 years old. He was the love of her life. Penny (as she called him) passed away July 15, 2019 and she missed him every day.

Colleen was a military wife who moved her family everywhere Penny was stationed, from the Coast of Maine to Louisiana to Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, Alaska and back to Louisiana where they retired. She was a secretary for the U.S Army Corps of Engineers in Anchorage, Alaska, secretary of Horseshoe Drive Baptist Church in Alexandria, Louisiana and secretary for base housing at England Air Force Base in Alexandria, Louisiana. Her secretarial skills, including her beautiful handwriting were par none.

When she and Penny retired in 1990, they travelled all over the United States, sightseeing and square dancing. They loved cruising, visiting casinos and making new friends. Colleen was a “lucky penny” as her husband called her and their retirement years were happy ones, spending time with the whole family every summer at Dauphin Island, Alabama and entertaining their friends playing cards weekly.

She loved baking pies and cakes and taking them to friends as well as her doctors, hair dresser, neighbors or anyone else who she thought needed some of her baked goodies. She was always content to let Penny have the limelight and stand behind him. But she had a quiet resolve and inner strength that served her well in hard times and we all came to respect and admire this.

She is survived by her three daughters, Sharon Penny Moore (John), Cheryl Penny Wilson (Kevin), and Karen Penny Brazzel (Allan); and eight grandchildren, Katie Moore Shumate (Fred), Beth Moore Perry (Chris), Jared Moore (Kristin), Meagan Wilson, Allison Jimenez Brazzel (Yamil), Sarah Brazzel, Emily Brazzel, and Matthew Brazzel; and one great grandchild, Jonas Yamil Jimenez Brazzel.
