Life Story for A. Houston Brewer Jr.

A. Houston Brewer Jr.
A celebration of the life of A. Houston Brewer, Jr. will be held Thursday, January 18, 2018, at Gallagher Funeral Home, Ball, LA. Visitation will start at 5:00 pm and service at 6:00 pm with Dr. Steve Speer officiating.

Mr. Brewer was born in Rivervale, Arkansas on December 10, 1942 to A. Houston Brewer, Sr. and Beth McArthur Brewer and passed from this life Sunday, January 14, 2018, at Rapides Regional Medical Center in Alexandria, LA after a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis. His ashes will rest in Lepanto, Arkansas, his hometown.

Houston graduated from Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, Arkansas with a degree in Business and Marketing. He later graduated from Louisiana College in Pineville, Louisiana with a teaching degree in Special Education.

He was a proud Navy veteran, serving in Intelligence at the Marine Corps Air Station in Uma, Arizona.

Those who loved him knew him as Shootie, Houston Jr., Dad, Daddy, Pop, Pepaw, Mister, and Sweet Boy. Houston wore many hats in his 75 years. He worked for Kroger in Memphis, TN and Salley’s Food Stores in Alexandria and Pineville, LA. However, Houston’s true love was farming on the Delta in Effie and Jonesville, LA. At the end of his working career, he was a Special Education teacher for the Avoyelles Parish School Board, 24 years teaching at Marksville Middle, Alert School, in the Avoyelles prisons, and at Oakdale Detention Center night school as a Reading Specialist.

Houston came to Louisiana in 1973 with three children in tow to raise. He would say, “I was born in Arkansas but became a Louisiana boy”. He loved the South and LSU football. He was a proud Southern Conservative and a man of many talents. He loved to cook, can pickles and tomatoes, and make jellies. Houston had a passion for reading, deer hunting, watching rodeos, playing blackjack, traveling, and enjoyed making a summer garden. He enjoyed watching the birds on his bird table right outside his window from his favorite chair. His personality was made up of a quick wit and a sense of sarcasm that not everyone got, but he was okay with that. The years before his illness, “Pepaw” was known for his big buffet-style breakfasts he would whip up for his grandchildren to enjoy. He was full of stories and loved storytelling, especially his comical adventures as a child growing up in Lepanto, Arkansas with his McArthur uncles. Houston had a passion for his family and their history and traveled back to Arkansas many times for family get-togethers.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Anita Smith Brewer; sons Tri Brewer (Kim) of Woodworth, LA and Shawn Brewer (Nicole) of Deville, LA; daughters Angela Williams (Donnie) of Lake City, AR and Naddia Melder (Randy) of Hineston, LA; beloved step-children Ashley Brown (Bobby) of Woodworth, LA, Bridget Bellino of Center Point, LA, and Victor Bellino (Tammy) of Elmer, LA; fourteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; brother Jon (Mack) Brewer of Newport, N.C., and sister Yecedrah Higman (Albert) of Coyville, KS; and his very special friends, Richard Barnett (Kay) of Lafayette, LA and Shannon Lachney (Angie) of Center Point, LA.

Houston was preceded in death by his father, A. Houston Sr.; mother, Beth McArthur Brewer; step-father, John Wallace; maternal grandparents, Hays and Roselyn Dickinson McArthur; and paternal grandparents, Earl and Cordy Bell Graham Brewer.

Houston’s seven-year illness took away his ability to hunt and travel, but his faith in God never wavered, showing a trust in his Lord and giving good example to his family and friends to the end of his life here on Earth. We were blessed to have known him and will miss him greatly.
